Do you feel like gettin’ in touch with nature? Or maybe practice some skiing, rafting, trekking, hiking, fishing or even bungie jumping? Then take your campervan and prepare yourself for a great trip, let your spirit be free and enjoy all the things Santiago has to offer! From rivers and lagoons to freaking high snowed mountains, you have everything you need to live an unforgettable experience!
Santiago is more than just the Capital of Chile. It’s more than just a big city full of buildings and noise. Near the basin where the city is located, just a few miles inside the cordillera, you can find amazing places that will for sure satisfy your need for nature and adventure.
You can start by going to Paine, known in Chile for having the best pastel de choclo (a dish made of corn and meat) and the best watermelons in the country. We encourage you to visit the restaurant “El rey del pastel de choclo” and discover why it’s called the king!
Keep going south and you’ll get to Laguna de Aculeo, a rural location where you can buy all vegetables and fruit (even some meat) right from the producers. The lagoon it’s a place for peace and rest, you’ll find campings and places to park your Wicked Camper, here you can go swimming, water skiing and fishing for silversides.
Next step on your trip are Isla de Pirque, a little rural town where you can also buy fruits and vegetables right from the producers and Rio Clarillo National Reserve, a natural location where you can spend your day hiking, swimming or just enjoying the nature.
Once you leave Rico Clarillo you can go Yerba Loca and the ski zones, known for having the best ski slopes in Latin America. There you will be near El Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado. Yerba Loca is a Natural Sanctuary, with a great diversity of flora and fauna, which makes it perfect for photography lovers. Plus, the place is perfect to practice hiking or trekking; and there’s even a glacier where you can get if you are willing to climb for hours!
Then comes the Maipo Valley, located near southeast the commune of Puente Alto. It’s easy to get there and to enjoy it you can go first to Río Olivares Park Project, the biggest green area in Santiago, where you can see the river bordering the mountains giving you a unique landscape. Here you can do this part of the trip on horse ride. In the town of San José de Maipo you can visit the local cousine before continuing journey. We strongly reccommend you visit “Casa Bosque” restaurant for lunch and after that maybe if you’re lucky you can ascend to the Lagunillas refuge.
The following part of the trip we reccommend to do it on 4WD, if not you should check the weather and ask for the road conditions, specially in winter.
And, for the last part of your trip, we give you 2 options, it’s up to you wich will be first (but don’t miss any of the two!) We’ll go with Embalse El Yeso first, wich is a water reservoir in the mountains, by it’s side you have Laguna Negra and in both of this sites you can do some fishing… or at least try. If you ascend a little more you’ll get to Termas del Plomo hot springs and all will be worth that moment. On the other hand there is El Morado Natural Monument, where you’ll find Baños Morales hot springs and Termas de Colina hot springs, separated by a few kilometers. When getting into El Morado park you’ll get to hike and snow walk, there’s even a glacier that comes out in winter!!
For as long as you’re in Maipo Valley, you’ll find places where to practice bungie jumping or rafting!!
