From Santiago to Pichilemu there are 200 Kms that you must drive along route 78. Pichilemu has become world famous as a paradise for surfers. You can go surf at beachesInfiernillo, Punta de Lobos and La Puntilla, highly recomended for pro surfers and for those who enjoy practicing funboard and windsurf. Also, you can practice Recreational Fishing, Swimming and Photography.
The idea of going direct to Pichilemu from Santiago is that you can maximize your time surfing and enjoy the surroundings of this little surfing paradise town. Once you are ready there, you should seriously consider making the wine route between Santa Cruz and San Fernando, at Colchagua Valley. This one is the most important of the wine routes Chile has, and besides the tours you’ll have the chance to do Hiking,Horseback Riding and Mountain Biking.
Another option you can take is first going from Santiago to San Antonio through Route 78 and later take “La Ruta de la fruta” (Fruit route) going south, till you arrive to Pichilemu.
San Antonio has a lot to offer. First of all, it’s better for you to go with hunger, cause there you can eat some of the best fishes and seafood preparations, or the tipical “pastel de papas” (potatoe cake). Trust us, you’ll want to eat a bunch of it!
Once you finished eating and enjoying San Antonio, you must drive to Pichilemu using the Fruit Route, called that way because connects San Antonio Harbor with the principal producers of fruit in central Chile.
If you want you can go from Santiago to Casablanca and then to the coastline. Choosing this option means to go directly from Santiago to Casablanca, where you can spend time visiting the wine route (there are four wine routes in Chile) and practice Hiking and Horseback Ridding. From Casablanca you must drive southwest to Algarrobo, where starts the first surfing spot, which includes Algarrobo, El Quisco, El Tabo,Cartagena and San Antonio. This places are perfect for semi professional or begginer surfers. Also, you can eat mindblowing delicious seafood and fish, take a walk and make photographs.
The second spot goes from La Boca to Topocalma, passing through Navidad, Matanzas and Puertecillo. This are very windy places so its perfect to practice Windsurf and Kitesurf, but not so much for surfing. You can of course also enjoy great beaches, nice restaurants and park in some places to rest your bones in your campervan.
As an extra and even when this is about going to Pichilemu, we have some extra destinations where you can go if you want. Once you are finished surfing at Pichilemu, you can keep driving south and you’ll arrive to another circuit that includes Bucalemu, Boyeruca, Llico, Lipimávida, Pichibudi and Vichuquén. This circuit (inlcuding Pichilemu) is ideal for professional surfers looking for the best waves in this part of the world. Maybe it’s not gonna be easy for you to find a camping, but there are two good news: Every place is really near to the next one and you are in a Wicked Camper!
To go back to Santiago we recommend you to drive back to Pichilemu and take freeway I 50 to Santa Cruz and San Fernando, two traditional places where to enjoy wine culture, restaurants, do some horseback riding and chill for a while or go bet some money at Colchagua’s Casino and Resort.
