Considering all the possibilities you have, let’s start with some idea of the route you can follow to enjoy your trip to the maximum. From Puerto Varas drive north till you get to Frutillar, a nice town located on the west edge of the Llanquihue Lake, full of great places where to eat traditional chilean and german food, and with all you need to practice nautic sports or take photos like a real pro!
From Frutillar (and only once you have eaten all you can!) drive along the edge of Llanquihue Lake up north and visit Puerto Octay to enjoy its beaches (at the Llanquihue Lake) and do some windsurfing, fishing, water skiing, sailing or take photos of places you’ll really miss once you leave! Also, there’s the great Osorno Volcano, which is perfect for skiing or snowboarding at winter, and to do trekking on summer.
Your next stop is at Entre Lagos, a commune located between lakes Puyehue and Rupanco. From there you can visit Puyehue National Park and enjoy its hotsprings and routes for trekking, full of cascades and forests. There are places for camping so, if you want, you can stay with your campervan and sleep on the wild, surrounded by trees, mountains and without a single noise apart from nature.
Now, from Entre Lagos you need to drive back to route 5 and keep going north and deviate East so you can visit Lago Ranco and Futrono, both places located on the edge of Ranco Lake with camping areas, and lots of things to do! For example, you can visit Isla Huapi (Huapi Island) which is inhabited by Mapuches and visit Huilo Huilo Reserve to fly biking on the mountains, or chill out fly fhishng with good music from your Wicked Camper…
Enjoy nights and days of the circuit made by Puerto Fuy, Coñaripe and Panguipulli, the three towns located right inside the heart of the Seven Lakes district. Get amazed looking at the saphire-blue lakes Riñigüe, Panguipulli, Pirihueico, Neltume, Pillaifa, Calafquén and Pullinque. Drive along roads surrounded by forests and crowned with volcanoes and lakeside beaches with sand actually made of Lava!
Once you’ve made the circuit, drive back to route 5 and take the road to Valdivia, called by locals as “the city of rivers”. Spend some time visiting the River Market, doing hiking at Sendero Los Alerces, visit the Punta Curiñaco Reserve or just take your time to plan the rest of the trip, cause now you’re going back to Puerto Varas!
In the middle of your road back to Puerto Varas you’ll find the city of Osorno. You may have been there already when going north to the Seven Lakes, but if you haven’t, you should make a stop there and enjoy Aguas Calientes Hotsprings or take a tour arround the forests, trekking or driving your camper van wherever you want to go!
